Honey bees are the most well-known type of bee. These highly valued insects produce honey. They have always been used by humans for honey cultivation, which served as a sweetener. These insects are not always gentle. Their stings are very painful and can cause significant harm to human health. However, they are insects with an impressive organization.

What Do Honey Bees Look Like?

They are small insects with wings and a hairy body. Honey bees live in colonies and are divided into three classes; each with a defined role. Thus, we distinguish the queen, the workers, and the drones. The queen is the most imposing. Generally, she measures between 17 and 20 mm with a very long abdomen having an ovipositor at its end. 

She never leaves the nest and her role is to lay eggs. Queens are the only bees capable of giving birth to all other bees. For a bee to become the queen, the larva is fed royal jelly found by the worker bees. Worker bees are much smaller than the queen and are the most active in the colony. 

They are responsible for feeding the queen and other bees. Worker bees ensure the survival and internal organization of the colony. They build and defend the habitat. They do not hesitate to attack anything that would pose a threat to the colony. Therefore, it is the worker bees that sting. 

Finally, drones' main role is to fertilize the queen. They result from an unfertilized egg. After mating with the queen, the drone will be killed. These insects have a very fascinating life cycle.

What is the Life Cycle of Honey Bees and Where Do They Live?

Honey bees do not live alone. Their colony is built around a queen. After fertilization by drones during a nuptial flight, the queen lays eggs. These eggs will then, after three days, hatch into a white larva, which will become a nymph and, in turn, molt after five transformations. 

An adult bee is then formed. Depending on the class, an egg will take between 16 and 24 days to become an adult. Worker bees are the fastest to become adults, taking 16 days from egg to adult stage. The queen takes 21 days, and drones take 25 days. Bee colonies often live in human-made hives. 

Thus, humans use them to obtain honey. They are also found in nature, gardens, meadows, and areas inhabited by humans. Honey bees are very popular insects due to the many benefits they provide. With a very special and fascinating organization, these creatures can sometimes be very disturbing to humans.
