In Spring

Regarding worker bees, the number of bee colonies in spring is higher, as this is the season when foragers collect and make honey.

From spring to the summer months, with spring development, a bee colony can number from 40,000 to 80,000 bees in a hive.

During the Winter Season

In winter, bees live longer but are fewer in number to ensure the transition from one season to the next.

However, regardless of the season, there is only one queen bee in each colony.

The queen has a longer lifespan, reaching 4 to 5 years.

Once winter is over, a bee hive can contain 20,000 to 30,000 bees.

How Many Bees Are in a Hive on Average?

On average, a hive can house about 60,000 bees in summer.

However, in winter, due to reduced colony activities, the number of bees in the hive is reduced to approximately 25,000 bees.

The number of bees also depends on the size of the apiary, but generally, there are more than 10,000 bees in a hive on average.

What is the Maximum Number of Bees in a Colony?

In a bee colony during peak season, you can count approximately 40,000 to 60,000 bees.

This entire workforce is the work of the hive's queen mother. She typically lays eggs in a season in proportion to her weight and can lay up to 2,000 eggs per day! 

Thus, during her 4 to 5-year lifespan, the colony's queen mother will give birth to approximately 500,000 bees. However, a hive can contain a maximum colony of about 400,000 to 500,000 bees.

What About the Number of Bees in a Swarm?

Due to insufficient resources that may occur in the hive during particular seasons, such as winter, a group of bees led by the queen mother may undertake to leave the nest to establish a new one elsewhere.

This group forms the swarm. The number of bees making up an initial swarm generally ranges from 30,000 to 35,000.
